Wax Poetic

Urge to Splurge/Indulge Myself 2011

I've been writing poetry for a long time now, and I'm the first to admit it's not always worth reading in retrospect (the world has enough Emo as it is).
I feel my best writing is done when I'm inspired by a concept, or even better, a personal experience. Such a moment sparked this piece and I've attempted to use formatting to help tell the story too...
Imagine a kiss between lovers who've been apart too long - this piece is essentially an ode to the moments they embrace upon first seeing each other again. When you feel this way about someone and it's been a while, the sensations get stopped up inside you until you feel like you'll burst and you become a walking kettle ready to boil over with thoughts of seeing them again. So when you DO see them a kiss releases a mélange of emotions from you to them. Passionate, intense & oblivious to the world around you both, you can't express enough how you feel - which is why the words at the top of this poem are closer together. There is an urgency in that moment; I imagine the words to be spoken quickly were the poem read aloud and the pace would slow as it went on. As the moment of reuniting wears off you notice people are beginning to stare, the intensity wanes & you settle into the comfort and happiness of being together. You remain euphoric but have got room to exhale - just like the formatting closer to the end of the piece.
